Westbrook’s All Aglow!

Have you noticed that downtown Westbrook is all aglow? It’s not just your imagination, because the beautiful holiday lights are back and better than ever in our downtown!

The tradition of holiday lights dates back centuries but didn’t become widespread in the U.S. until about 100 years ago, in 1920.

A wonderful part of the holiday season, festive light arrays have added sparkle to our seasonal decor for decades. In the age of COVID-19, they are also a tradition that’s perfect for social distancing.

Thank you to the Public Works Department

Westbrook’s holiday lights have been growing steadily every year, thanks to the dedication of the City’s illustrious Public Works Department. It seems like this year, they went all out to make sure the holiday spirit was felt from the second you spot these gorgeous lights!

Doug Eaton, the operations supervisor for the city, says he enjoys the joy that the lights bring.

“This time of year, when the daylight hours continue to decrease, the lights add a little bit of warmth to the cold dark night sky,” said Eaton. “And in a year like we are all having, they also bring a little bit of hope.”

Glowing from around Thanksgiving to just after the New Year, Westbrook’s holiday lights provide the perfect backdrop for an inspired evening stroll through the downtown or heated outdoor dining along the riverwalk.

Enjoy the lights display while you eat and drink downtown!

Come check out Westbrook’s beautiful holiday lights display in the downtown area. And while you’re here, be sure to check out some of our many dining options including Big Fin Poke, Legends Rest Taproom, The Frog & Turtle, Portland Pie, Jack’s Thai, Profenno’s, and more.

Don’t forget to reserve a spot at Mast Landing’s new Igloo City, perfect for enjoying a craft beer in an igloo! These igloos are a lovely way to watch the lights from afar while staying warm.

They are pretty popular and a reservation is required to make sure social distancing is enforced. If you get a seat in one of the front igloos, it’s the perfect spot to see some of the many holiday lights that are making Westbrook a beautiful place to be this holiday season!

Whether you choose to enjoy the holiday lights walking along the riverwalk or while you’re enjoying a craft beer, this tradition is one of our favorites and we hope they bring a smile to your face this holiday season. We wish you and your family health and happiness!
