Westbrook Common

Westbrook Common is Discover Downtown Westbrook’s placemaking initiative. Featuring live music and dance, art activities, markets, yoga, zumba, and more, the Common is a space for everyone to relax, connect, and find their place in downtown Westbrook.

Westbrook Common one of the two primary homes of Discover Downtown Westbrook’s summer events. The Common is designed to be a space for events that the community wants to see, be part of, and return to. Situated in the heart of downtown Westbrook, the Common is easily accessible by public transportation, bike, car, or on foot.

The 2026 season is coming…

Placemaking is a concept that began in the 1960s with innovators like Jane Jacobs, who suggested that cities should be designed for the people who live in them rather than for cars and large shopping centers. Her work focused on creating vibrant and lively neighborhoods and cultivating inviting urban spaces. Each year, we honor Jacob’s work by hosting an annual Jane’s Walk festival around Westbrook.

June 2023: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Westbrook Common

Placemaking creates a conversation among residents to understand and engage with the space. It is inherently a group effort, in which people, businesses, and organizations who care deeply about the community work toward a common goal of improving their city. Placemaking is an ever-evolving process, a job that is never truly ‘done’. It takes observation about use and public desire to understand what works, what doesn’t, and what could be. DDW consulted the Westbrook community to understand how best to design, use, and organize the Common to make the greatest impact on our downtown.

We started with a community survey, gathering input from residents, business owners, employees, and families. It was abundantly clear that Westbrook wanted a vibrant space to spend time passively, to organize fun activities like live music and markets, to enjoy the outdoors with movement, and to have opportunities to connect with neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family. On June 21, 2023, we held a ribbon-cutting for Westbrook Common and opened it to the public with a summer full of free events! Thanks to our Founding Partner, Lighthouse Credit Union (formerly Northeast Credit Union), we have been able to continue hosting events in the Common every year since it’s opening.

Now in our fourth year of programming at Westbrook Common, we at Discover Downtown Westbrook take time each year to review attendance, engagement, and energy at the Common to make adjustments that make the space most amenable to the community! Look below for a peek at what events we have in store for this year.

What’s In Store at Westbrook Common?

207 Music Series

The 207 Music Series is a stage for local artists to make their name. On six Saturday evenings from June to August 2026, the Common will be home to Maine-based musicians who write and perform their own music. DDW partners with 98.9 WCLZ to identify some of the best new talent to bring into Westbrook for this series.

Last year’s lineup saw Connor Garvey, Hildaland, Frank Gallagher, Dominic Lavoie, and more. Thank you to 98.9 WCLZ for promotional support of this series, and to all who have stopped by to listen, hang out, and enjoy the 207 Music Series.

This year’s series is booked, and DDW plans to release the lineup soon. Come to Westbrook Common for live music from 5-7 PM on selected dates in June, July, and August.

If you are a Maine-based, original musician or band interested in playing at Westbrook Common for the 2027 summer season, please contact us.

Westbrook Wellness

Westbrook Wellness is a summer program that promotes healthy lifestyle choices and offers opportunities to learn, move, and improve your health while connecting with the community. This initiative offers a diverse selection of free, accessible programming at Westbrook Common, and embodies a placemaking philosophy by adopting a people-centric approach to fostering environments that support our community’s health and well-being.

Made possible through funding from the Warren Memorial Foundation and a partnership with Westbrook School Nutrition, Discover Downtown Westbrook encourages balanced lifestyle choices in four ways:

  1. Establishing convenient, accessible outdoor fitness programming
  2. Promoting access to healthy food options
  3. Creating opportunities to connect with other community members
  4. Encouraging outdoor recreation and connection with the Presumpscot River

With over forty free wellness events, ranging from zumba to salsa, line dancing to guided bike rides, there is something for everyone! Events occur throughout the week, making it possible to fit into anyone’s schedule. Our partnership with Westbrook School Nutrition enables our organization to offer and host free, healthy summer lunches for children at Westbrook Common, served every Tuesday and Wednesday during summer break. Westbrook Wellness culminates with our annual Monsters Run the River 5k race in October, to encourage movement, enjoy the fall foliage, and bring the community together one more time before the summer season is over.

Art & Creative Programming

Another component of Westbrook Common is keeping attention on our creative economy. Westbrook is home to many artists, makers, and creatives, and we wish to bring the city’s creative identity into Westbrook Common for the community to participate in. This initiative promotes creation and creativity across age groups to bring attention to the importance and abundance of art in the Westbrook community.

This 2026 season, Discover Downtown Westbrook plans to showcase local artists and makers through bi-weekly markets and weekly art programming for children. We partner with Mama Mia Making for Creationships events, designed to encourage relating through creating.

Save & Sustain Series

In 2026 we are kicking off a brand new event type! Our Save & Sustain series, in partnership with Lighthouse Credit Union, is a home for events that platform sustainable and cost-saving hobbies, skills, and activities. In times of economic uncertainty, the importance of a third space for connection and free community activities cannot be understated.

Save & Sustain will likely feature secondhand clothing shopping, clothing mending workshops, gear tune ups, and more – all in the name of sustainability and reducing financial burdens. In partnership with our founding partner Lighthouse Credit Union, DDW is planning to host financial literacy workshops and opportunities to learn more about keeping costs low without needing to skip on the fun. While Save & Sustain events may be more educational than recreational, it revolves around what Westbrook Common is truly about—creating opportunities to connect, recreate, and learn without needing to reach into your wallet.
